THE INVISIBLE COLLEGE
It sounds like Harry Potter, but this was the name given by Robert Boyle to the group of natural scientists who met regularly to exchange ideas and discuss their experiments. The college was the precursor to the Royal Society, which was founded in London in 1660. Leibniz went there to demonstrate the calculating machine he had designed and built. A large metal contraption operated by cranks and dials, Leibniz’s Stepped Reckoner was the first machine of its kind to not only add and subtract but also multiply and divide.
